The Gift of Community – Thursday December 13, 2012
When I think about community, I think about my street, my neighbourhood and my network. But I also think about community in the biggest sense and how I’m probably connected to people I don’t know, in ways I can’t even fathom.
I also love stories about how people and groups intentionally create community. That’s why I love the story of the Community Yoga Class fromQueen Street Yoga in downtown Kitchener. In it’s 5 years of operation QSY has offered a weekly class, open to everyone. This by donation, ‘pay-what-you-can’ class suddenly makes yoga a lot more accessible to a wider segment of the community.
Aaaaand…. QSY donates the class collection to a number of different charities, both local and global. In 5 years, they have donated several thousand dollars to charities and initiatives, in addition to paying the teachers for the classes. This past summer, Yoga in the Park (pictured above) raised $750.
Whether you prefer building community with the people & neighbours in your immediate neighbourhood or contributing to the greater cosmic community, it’s all community building community in the end. And that’s the important part.
So, come join us for some community building yoga! Join me and several of the 12 Days for Good ‘Do-Gooders’ for the Community Yoga Class TONIGHT!
